The prostate is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most paramount role is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate is a bit larger than a walnut. Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medication or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results can highly suggest disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been uncovered that drugs including Docetaxel could be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
