Welcome to this webpage about what does a rising psa mean after prostate surgery
The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most important role is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of semen. A healthy man's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal examination.
Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme cases totally impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even operations.
In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).
Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could be an indicator of disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that medications including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
