The prostate is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's overriding role is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel are useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
