The prostate gland is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its leading function is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate gland is slightly bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can impede urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe situations totally impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or operations.

In older men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects elderly males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised blood PSA results can signal disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been uncovered that medicines such as Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or just for sexual purposes.
