The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's most paramount role is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human's prostate is somewhat bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might signify disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been detected that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
