The prostate is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its chief job is to produce and store a clear liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results might be an indicator of disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been noted that medicines including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual purposes.
