The prostate is really a gland that is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's primary function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human prostate gland is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe instances totally impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may indicate a disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
