The prostate gland is a component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's paramount job is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human's prostate is somewhat larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Raised blood PSA results could signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been discovered that medications like Docetaxel could be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
