The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most important function is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impassable. In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Raised blood PSA results might highly suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noticed that drugs including Docetaxel are helpful in treating cancer.
